BIOGRAPHY:

Dr. Partha Sarathi fascination with immunology began during his Masters dissertation project in Veterinary Immunology. Dr. Partha entered the doctoral program in the University of Tennessee, where he studied the mechanisms of virus-induced corneal immunopathology. His work highlighted the role of early innate immune events in corneal immunopathology. He published six first author papers in peer reviewed journals including Journal of Immunology (IF: 5.4), Journal of Leukocyte Biology (IF: 4.3) and Journal of Virology (IF: 4.9). Consequently, he received the Excellence in graduate research award, an award given every year to the best graduate student. His interest in inflammatory diseases led me to pursue postdoctoral training in New York, first at Columbia University and later in The Hospital for Special Surgery. Here, He was introduced to the field of T helper 17 cells and their function in lupus nephritis. Results from his work redefined our understanding about the negative regulatory mechanisms responsible for controlling aberrant production of IL-17, and how breakdown of these mechanisms leads to lupus nephritis. These studies were published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation (IF: 13.7) and Journal of Experimental Medicine (IF: 13.9), which received considerable media attention. Dr. Partha Sarathi was awarded a Keystone Symposia Postdoctoral Trainee Award for oral presentation of his work in 2010 and he received a SLE Foundation career development grant to continue further research on cytokine dysregulation in lupus nephritis. In September 2011, He took up the position as Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh. Prof. Patha Extending his prior work in renal inflammatory diseases, He have established a research program that centers on understanding the role of IL-17 in renal immunity and inflammation. HIs basic science research program addresses a major problem in the field of renal immunity and inflammation. Kidney is often subject to fungal and bacterial infections. Yet, renal immunology remains remarkably understudied by immunologists, and so He has positioned himself to take advantage of this important gap in the scientific community. Renal specific factors including poor regenerative capacity of nephrons, toxins, hypoxia and blood pressure significantly impact the outcomes of immune and inflammatory events. Hence, studying renal immune response against extra-cellular pathogens particularly fungi are a challenging but medically important field of research. Moving to Pittsburgh provided to him a unique opportunity to interact and collaborate with a diverse group of scientists involved in studying IL-17 biology in health and diseases. Dr. Partha lab developed rapidly and since 2011 we have published five papers (two other manuscripts are in review) in well regarded peer reviewed journals. We demonstrated a previously unanticipated kidney-specific role of IL-17 in the pathogenesis of autoimmune glomerulonephritis. This paper appears to be of great interest to the scientific community, as it is the most frequently downloaded article from the Journal of Leukocyte Biology during first six months after publication. In two other publications, we provided new insights in understanding the co-existence and co-regulation of Type I Interferon and T-helper 17 pathways in lupus nephritis. One of these papers was highlighted in the "In this issue" section of Journal of Immunology. In a recent study, we discovered that IL-17 protects the kidney in disseminated candidiasis by regulating the renal protective Kallikrien-kinin-system (KKS). These studies helped him to secure a R01 NIH award, Emma and Winters Foundation grant, a Junior Faculty Scholar award and American Association of Immunology (AAI) Trainee-Mentor award and Rheumatology Research Foundation grant. To date, He has published over 36 peer reviewed publications. He is first author on 40% and mentoring/supervising author on 12% of these reports. Dr. Partha presented his work at both national and international meetings and delivered seminars as an invited guest speaker. In particular, he was invited to give a platform presentation at the prestigious AAI national meeting, May 2015. His post-doctoral fellow received 1st prize in Basic Research in the Dept. of Medicine Research Day, 2013. Dr. Partha graduate student received a travel grant award and was also selected for an oral presentation at the Annual AAI Conference. Thus, He is well on the way to developing a thriving and productive research group.
