BIOGRAPHY:

Ben Valdez obtained his PhD in Biochemistry at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He did his post-doctoral training at Baylor College of  Med in Houston, Texas and specialized on the functional characterization of nucleolar proteins. He stayed at Baylor and became an Assistant Professor in the Dept of Pharmacology. His laboratory isolated the genes and corresponding cDNAs for RNA helicase II/Gu α and β (frog, mouse and human) and subsequently discovered their roles in ribosomal RNA biogenesis and cell proliferation. His laboratory also identified the functions of treacle, a nucleolar protein encoded by the gene, in the expression and methylation of pre-ribosomal RNA. Loss-of-function mutations in the gene underlie Treacher Collins syndrome, an autosomal dominant disorder of craniofacial development. It is now believed that treacle haploinsufficiency results in sub-optimal rRNA production which causes nucleolar stress and subsequent activation of p53. While at Baylor, Dr. Valdez was involved in teaching Pharmacology to allied health and medical students. In 2005, he transferred to the Dept of Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas. He is an Associate Professor and his translational research focuses on the identification of safe and efficacious regimen for pre-conditioning therapy prior to hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
