BIOGRAPHY:

Dr. Sher Zaman Safi (M.Sc, M.Phil, PhD) graduated in medicine with a focus on epigenetics and molecular bioogy of diabetic complications such as diabetic retinopathy, inflammation, insulin resistance and beta cell dysfunction. He has also gained a good research experience in virology and immunology specially HCV, HBV and HIV. In South Korea, he worked on a project titled "regulation of DNMTs by NGN-1 in mesenchymal stem cells". In the University of Malaya he was engaged in sevral research projects such as "effect of gelam honey on the oxidative stress-induced signalling in pancreatic hamster cells and STZ-induced diabetic Rats". He also worked on a project "ROS production and cell membrane potential in hyperglycemic HUVECs". Currently he is working on gastrointestinal microbiota in irritable bowel syndrome. He has published his research in a range of reputed international journals and sits on the editorial board of several journals. Dr. Safi also serves as external reviewers for many reputable international journals such as plos one. He has presented his work in many international conferences and symposia.  He has been the winner of prestigious scholarships such as Korean Government Scholarship, Bright Spark Scholarship (from UM) and S&T Scholarship (from NUST). He has also been winner of several awards such as travel awards from JDRF Australia and Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver (APASL).
