BIOGRAPHY:

I was born in Palermo in 1949, and after high school diploma, I was accepted at the Medical College in the University of Palermo, and graduated in 1973 with maximum score. Afterwards I moved to University of Pavia where I was accepted at the Specialization School of Hematology, with the diploma obtained in 1976 and later also Internal Medicine, with diploma obtained in 1980. Since 1974 I worked as Registrar at the Emergency dept of Voghera Hospital, and since 1979 at the Department of Hematology of Policlinico San Matteo, Pavia. I was already involved with clinical and biological research and already had a number of publications. In 1980 I moved to Palermo, Ospedale V. Cervello, where as registrar I remained at the Hematology dept till 1988, afterwards as director from 1988 to 2000, when I was charged of the Hematology Dept at the San Camillo Hospital in Rome as director, where I remained till 2015, the year I retired. During the years in Palermo and in Rome, my interest was in the field of stem cell transplantation. I contributed to the start-up of the BMT center in Palermo, Ospedale V.Cervello, and improved the performance of the BMT center at San Camillo, in Rome, driving its quality improvement process and JACIE certification. I published more than 100 full papers in international journals and still I am publishing reviews and scientific reports om my cooperation activity. In fact, since the year 2007 I have been involved in several health cooperation projects, namely in Eritrea, Mauritania, Mozambique, and Iraqi Kurdistan. The latter project, scientifically coordinated by me and funded by the Italian cooperation Agency, has resulted in the start-up of the first and unique transplantation program in that country, with autologous and allogeneic clinical transplants started in 2016. I’m currently doing my private practice at Salvator Mundi International Hospital, Rome, and I am still deeply involved with the cooperation project in Iraqi Kurdistan at the Hiwa Cancer Hospital, Sulemania.
