Dr. Dongyang (D.Y.) Li is a Professor at University of Alberta. His interests of research include surface science & engineering, nano-materials, tribology and tribo-physics, and computational materials science. Dr. Li obtained a B.Sc. in Solid Mechanics from University of Science and Technology China (1982), a M.Sc. in Solid-State Physics from Zhongshan University (1985), a PhD in Materials Physics from University of Science and Technology Beijing (1990) and a PhD in Metallurgical Engineering from McGill University (1995). Before joining U of Alberta in 1998, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Pennsylvania State University (1995-97). He is an Adjunct Professor in Deptartment of Biomedical Engineering, U. of Alberta, a visiting professor at the National University of Singapore (2004, 2012) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2011), and a foreign doctoral advisor at the Harbin Institute of Technology. Dr. Li is on the editorial board for eleven technical journals, and has in excess of three hundred technical publications, including two hundred and eighty journal publications.

Dr. D.Y. Li has conducted extensive research in surface/interface science and materials engineering with a wide range of topics: 1) the correlation between the electron behavior and material properties, and development of electron work function based methodology/approaches for material design; 2) Surface engineering, wear and corrosion control, 3) computational materials science and tribology, 4) Bacteria-metal surface interaction, and 5) photocatalytic nanotubular films. Since joined University of Alberta, Dr. Li has developed a highly recognized Surface and Wear program.
