BIOGRAPHY:

Manisha Verma is a prominent researcher in the field of patient centered outcomes research. She is responsible for promoting and facilitating leading edge research, including collaborative and interdisciplinary research, in areas related to the mission of the Department (to advance patient care, education and new treatments for liver diseases). She also provides regulatory and financial oversight for the Department of Transplantation’s research enterprise. She has been awarded a prestigious grant with Dr. Navarro in August 2017 ($14.2 Million) from the PCORI (Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute) to compare the effectiveness of two palliative care delivery models: Hepatologist led versus Palliative care provider led for patients with End Stage Liver Disease. She is the pioneer in creating this comparative effectiveness research, and the award is one of the largest funded projects by PCORI. This kind of groundbreaking research may improve the quality of life and overall survival of liver disease patients, and potentially change evidence based practice. Dr. Verma has won both the Albert Einstein Society Innovative Award and Albert Einstein Society Research Award as a Principal Investigator. As a research scientist, Dr. Verma works on the National Institutes of Health-funded Drug Induced Liver Injury Network (DILIN), collecting and analyzing cases of severe liver injury caused by prescription drugs, over-the counter drugs and alternative medicine. Dr. Verma has expertise in health services research, and conducts research in improving patient centered care through telehealth initiatives, integrating palliative care and behavioral health within routine care. She is currently testing the utility of remote monitoring of liver disease symptoms and cognitive function through a "Liver Co-pilot App” in reducing 30 day hospital readmissions. Her scholarly works include peer-reviewed publications in prominent journals like Cancer Journal for Clinicians, Hepatology and Clinical Gastro and Hepatology. Dr. Verma received her medical degree from the Government Medical College in Amritsar, India, followed by a junior residency with the Department of Medicine at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). She completed her Master’s degree in Public Health at Jefferson School of Population Health.
