BIOGRAPHY:

Over the past 20 years, the primary focus of my research has centered on characterizing the molecular details of lipid handling, including our defining key mechanisms in liver and adipose responsible for controlling systemic triacylglyceride balance. Much of this research has highlighted the roles for LDL receptor family members in lipoprotein handling. With this background, my laboratory has more recently redirected our attention to the global obesity problem. In this area, we are investigating the mechanisms that lead to, and sustain the chronic inflammation that develops in an obese state, as well as obtaining new evidence describing the effects of this inflammation on metabolic activities of obese adipose that lead to hyperlipidemia. These studies have great bearing on developing much needed therapeutics to address the obesity-dependent ailments of atherosclerotic disease and type II diabetes mellitus.
